Dragonheart Vermont is a breast cancer-related nonprofit organization. While raising funds to purchase two dragon boats to race on Lake Champlain and in competitions around the region, a close friend who is on their board asked me to create and donate a quilt for a silent auction. She provided me with several photographs from which to work, so this quilt actually has components of four different photos. Similar views can be seen on their website at www.dragonheartvermont.org. It is a view of Lake Champlain and the Adirondacks of Upstate New York taken from downtown Burlington, Vermont's beautiful waterfront park. The boat is based on one borrowed from another dragon boat racing organization in Boston. I added a touch of whimsy by having the rowers be the pink ribbons that have become an international symbol of support for breast cancer survivors. The crew member steering at the back of the boat has a big heart for a body in addition to the pink ribbon in honor of the organization's name and big-hearted spirit. I'm happy to say their fundraising was successful and they now have two boats of their own on Lake Champlain!
