The artist’s comments on this quilt
This picture was pretty, but it needed a little more oomph to make it a great quilt. I suggested a sunset sky which the client agreed would be pretty. We may or may not actually be looking west, but hey, it's a quilt. For a little more visual interest, I added the three Canada geese flying over the lake and decided to have a canoe entering into the scene to add something in the foreground which brings more dimension to this view. If you look closely, you'll see a picnic basket, a bottle of wine and a folded red and white tablecloth in the canoe -- thus the name of the quilt.
I actually had to make this view twice, once above the water and once again upside down in the water, to accomplish the effect of a reflection. There are layers of blue tulle over the bottom half of the quilt to complete this effect. It makes the quilt a tad stiff, but for a wallhanging it's fine. I think the quilt now has a beautiful and dramatic impact.
