The artist’s comments on this quilt
Shelburne Vineyard is a lovely vineyard on the shores of Lake Champlain, that looks across the lake to the Adirondack Mountains of Upstate New York. The picture used on their wine labels looks like a photograph but is in fact a spectacularly realistic painting done by local artist Robert Huntoon. Vineyard owner Ken Albert explained that there’s actually some artistic license in the painting because his vines are depicted in an East to West fashion for a more attractive image when in fact they’re planted in a North to South configuration for better sun. I loved the composition of this picture and had to make it into a quilt. I couldn’t get the contrast I wanted between the lake, mountains and sky using mostly blues as was done in the painting, so I have more green in my mountains, but in fact the mountains are green most of the year so it worked for me. This quilt is actually my own, but I did make another one for Ken with slightly different fabrics which he has hanging in his winery. If you look closely, you’ll see that I cut out individual little grape leaves – dozens and dozens of them – to make the vines come alive. I know, I know… wine from Vermont? It’s very good wine, really!
