The artist’s comments on this quilt

I took more artistic license on this quilt than in some of the quilts I make because it helped convey the features of the picture more effectively. The stripes of different colored fabrics highlight the stratified nature of this rock. In the picture, the top half of the rock is blackened while the bottom half is brighter as the older stained rock has fallen away. I chose to highlight the difference by choosing darker colors from the same color family for the top half of the quilt. I am never literal with the placement of trees, shrubs and plants in these types of views because I think it’s better to have the flexibility to have a visually pleasing placement of shapes and color – it still conveys the idea of shrubs and pine trees in a sandy valley. I really liked the silhouetted trees in the foreground of the photograph, so I capitalized on that in the quilt. The cave in the photo isn’t as deep as what I depicted in the quilt, it’s more of a rock arch, but I love the way the deeper cave raises you higher to look down into the cave and valley, and draws you into the quilt. The client needed a specific size for this quilt, so I extended the wall up beyond what’s shown in the photo. The quilting adds a craggy look to the rocks and significantly enhances the quilt’s look.
